Finally you can get rid of your discolored, cracked fungal toenails or onychomycosis with the latest laser advances. While lasers may seem scary to some, they are used daily for cosmetic procedures using safe light energy.
The CoolTouch CT3Plus CoolBreeze produces laser energy that is specifically absorbed by water which is associated with the collagen in the nail matrix. The Cooltouch laser is so sophisticated that it automatically detects the proper target temperature needed to achieve destruction of the nail fungus. The laser treatment stops immediately when this temperature is reached and then the nail is cooled with a automated cryo spray. This allows for fungal death without damaging the skin or the nail growth plate. Cooltouch’s impeccable safety emanates from its incorporating pulsed cooling and real-time temperature feedback into its treatments. In addition, the CoolBreeze Handpiece features an adjustable spot size from 3 mm to 10 mm allowing for adjustments based on nail size for most effectiveness. Other lasers currently being used do not incorporate these advanced features for patients leading to less desirable outcomes and minimal safety features. The Cooltouch laser can kill nail fungus automatically while incorporating safety. Each patient receives a customized treatment leading to the best possible outcome. This is truly unique and a feature not available on other lasers.
While there are several laser technologies available, The Pinpointe is essentially a laser designed for dental procedures with modifications to capture a new market, toenails. So the design and treatment is less than optimal. The Pinpointe has a small spot size that can produce a problem known as stacking. Stacking comes from overlapping of the laser beam in the same area possibly leading to burns and damage. Small spot size can also lead to missed areas of treatment. Drs also do not like the fact that the laser treatment is performed with no control of the beam distance or desired temperature for fungal death and this leads to inconsistent treatments with poorly controlled outcomes. Additionally, the beam is not accompanied by cooling to avoid surrounding tissue damage. The current single treatment with Pinpointe has also become controversial. There is increasing evidence that to be effective, two or even three treatments are necessary and best for the patient. The single treatment protocol resulted from the fact that the doctor was charged each time the laser was turned on, hardly in the best interest of the patient.
Other laser treatments are one treatment, compared to the more effective Cooltouch with which two treatment or more are recommended. There are different growth phases of the nail and fungus and the best results occur when the patient receives at least 2 treatments with laser. The cost of 3 treatments with the Cooltouch is usually less compared to only one treatment with the Pinpointe laser.
Today, laser has become superior to all other remedies for fungal toenails. However, patients need to follow a maintenance regimen to prevent recurrence of the toenail infection. While success rates are high, no treatment can guarantee success all of the time.

Who gets toenail fungus?
Almost 50% of people over 40 have experienced some type of toenail fungus. It is incredibly common, but more prevalent in athletes (due to trauma) and person with decreased immune systems.
The typical athletes’ foot fungus, called dermatophyte, is the same fungus that infects your toenails. Fungus loves a moist, dark environment like your shoes. The affected toenails can have a whitish superficial infection or a yellow to brown discoloration under the toenails that seems to destroy the nail as it grows. Left untreated it can become painful and cause secondary problems with ingrown nails and infections.
Previous topical solutions could not penetrate the nail to treat the underlying condition and worked only when caught extremely early often just slowing the spread. The oral medication worked better, but presented possible side effects to the liver and kidney.
Laser Technology kills the pathogens that cause toenail fungus. In clinical studies 88% of treated patients grew out a normal nail after one treatment.
Is the treatment safe?
There is no age or health restriction or limitations. In clinical studies there have been no adverse reactions, injuries, disabilities or known side effects
Does it really work?
In the first clinical study, 88% of the treated patients grew out a normal looking nail after one treatment. After one treatment, the nail plate should grow out normally in 6-12 months if there is a healthy nail bed. The result is comparable to the success rate for the oral pill, Lamisil, which you daily for three to six months with some risk of side effects. Onychomycosis – Nail Fungus
Fungal infection of the nail, or onychomycosis, is often ignored because the infection can be present for years without causing any pain. The disease is characterized by a progressive change in a toenail’s quality and color, which is often ugly and embarrassing.
In reality, the condition is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. When the tiny organisms take hold, the nail often becomes darker in color and foul smelling. The appearance of nails infected with onychomycosis varies greatly; there are some examples to the right. Debris may collect beneath the nail plate, white marks frequently appear on the nail plate, and the infection is capable of spreading to other toenails, the skin, or even the fingernails. If ignored, r the infection can spread and possibly impair one’s ability to work or even walk. This happens because the resulting thicker nails are difficult to trim Examples of and make walking painful when wearing shoes.
Onychomycosis can also be accompanied by a secondary bacterial or yeast infection in or about the nail plate.
Because it is difficult to avoid contact with microscopic organisms like fungi, the toenails are especially vulnerable around damp areas where people are likely to be walking barefoot, such as swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers, for example.
Injury to the nail bed may make it more susceptible to all types of infection, including fungal infection. Those who suffer from chronic diseases, such as diabetes, circulatory problems, or immune-deficiency conditions, are especially prone to fungal nails. Other contributing factors may be a history of athlete’s foot and excessive perspiration.
• Proper hygiene and regular inspection of the feet and toes are the first lines of defense against fungal nails.
• Clean and dry feet resist disease.
• Washing the feet with soap and water, remembering to dry thoroughly, is the best way to prevent an infection.
• Shower shoes should be worn when possible in public areas.
• Shoes, socks, or hosiery should be changed more than once daily.
• Toenails should be clipped straight across so that the nail does not extend beyond the tip of the toe.
• Wear shoes that fit well and are made of materials that breathe.
• Avoid wearing excessively tight hosiery, which promote moisture.
• Socks made of synthetic fiber tend to “wick” away moisture faster than cotton or wool socks.
• Disinfect instruments used to cut nails.
• Disinfect home pedicure tools.
• Don’t apply polish to nails suspected of infection-those that are red, discolored, or swollen, for example.
Treatment of Fungal Nails
Treatments may vary, depending on the nature and severity of the infection. A daily routine of cleansing over a period of many months may temporarily suppress mild’ infections. White markings that appear on the surface of the nail can be filed off, followed by the application of an over-the-counter liquid antifungal agent. However, even the best over-the-counter treatments may not prevent a fungal infection from coming back.
A podiatric physician can detect a fungal infection early, culture the nail, determine the cause, and form a suitable treatment plan, assessing risks and weighing the benefits against those risks for each patient.
In some cases, surgical treatment may be required. Temporary removal of the infected nail can be performed to permit direct application of a topical antifungal. Permanent removal of a chronically painful nail that has not responded to any other treatment permits the fungal infection to be cured and prevents the return of a deformed nail.
Trying to solve the infection without the qualified help of a podiatric physician can lead to more problems. With new technical advances in combination with simple preventive measures, the treatment of this bothersome health problem can often be successful.
